In a surprising turn of events during last summer’s transfer window, Moises Caicedo, the former Brighton star, opted to reject a last-minute move to Liverpool in favor of joining Chelsea later in the summer. The 22-year-old Ecuadorian midfielder was highly sought after by several top clubs in England, making him one of the transfer window’s most talked-about players.

Initially linked with a move to Arsenal, the deal did not materialize, leading the Gunners to pursue West Ham’s Declan Rice instead. With Arsenal out of the running, Chelsea appeared poised to secure Caicedo’s signature for their midfield rebuild. However, Liverpool unexpectedly entered the fray with a substantial offer.

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, hinted at the potential transfer, generating significant anticipation. Nevertheless, Caicedo ultimately declined Liverpool’s offer and chose to make a move to Stamford Bridge, sealing a record £115 million deal.

In an interview with Sky Sports, the midfielder disclosed the reasons behind his decision to opt for Chelsea over the table-topping Liverpool, shedding light on the factors that influenced his choice.

“I was talking with Chelsea for a long time. It was impossible to say not to Chelsea, because they were with me supporting me,” he said.

“They were with me, and in the last moment Liverpool called me but it was [too] late because I wanted to play for Chelsea. It was tough to say no to Chelsea.”
