Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has dismissed the idea that the memory of their stunning 7-0 victory over Manchester United last season serves as motivation for the upcoming clash. Klopp, ahead of Sunday’s face-off, emphasized that such a result is a rare occurrence and shouldn’t be considered a driving force this time around.
Liverpool is set to host an injury-hit United side, seeking to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League table. Despite United’s recent struggles, Klopp remains focused on securing three points rather than dwelling on past achievements. The Reds won convincingly in their last encounter with United, with Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, and Darwin Nunez each scoring twice in the 7-0 triumph.
Klopp stated, “The 7-0 we knew that day, it was a freak result that happens once in a lifetime.” He clarified that if such a result were closer to the end of the season and pivotal for the title race, he might draw on it for motivation. However, in the current context, he emphasized the primary focus is on securing a win in the highly-anticipated fixture.
“If you take it all out of consideration and just play a football game against the historical rival of Liverpool at home at Anfield that itself must make it a special game and that’s what I want to see from us, a special game.”It is a home game. It is for the people. We know what it means. No one would expect us not to care. We care a lot (but) we cannot go nuts before the game already.”
As Liverpool heads into the match as favorites, Klopp cautioned against expecting a repeat of the historical 7-0 result, emphasizing the significance of playing a special game against their historical rival at Anfield. Klopp acknowledged the importance of the match for the fans and the club but stressed the need for a balanced approach, avoiding getting carried away before the game even begins.
