Liverpool’s Striking Conundrum: Gakpo Gains Fan Favor as Nunez Struggles Persist
Liverpool’s attacking prowess has hit a rough patch in recent weeks, with their forwards struggling to find the back of the net. In the last five games since December, the Reds have managed just nine goals, and the quartet of Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo has contributed only one of those goals.
Surprisingly, Liverpool’s defenders and midfielders have outscored their attacking counterparts during this period, highlighting the uncharacteristic dip in form for the usually prolific front line. Notably, Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno has scored as many goals for Liverpool this month (via an own goal) as the fit attackers have managed.
Among the attackers, Nunez stands out as the one dividing opinions the most. Despite making a strong start to the season, the Uruguayan striker has gone without a goal since November 1 and is currently underperforming his Premier League expected goals by +5.10.
The absence of Diogo Jota due to injury has limited Jurgen Klopp’s options, with Gakpo being the primary alternative to the misfiring Nunez. However, the Dutchman has also struggled to make a significant impact, scoring one goal fewer than Nunez this season.
As Liverpool faces a challenging Carabao Cup quarter-final against West Ham United before returning to Premier League action against league leaders Arsenal, Klopp must make crucial decisions regarding his starting lineup. The center-forward position, in particular, is a point of contention between Nunez and Gakpo.
In a poll conducted among Liverpool fans, it is evident that Gakpo is the preferred choice, securing 71% of the votes compared to Nunez’s 29%. The fans advocate for giving Gakpo a chance to thrive, especially as Nunez’s form has dipped. The Dutch forward has shown versatility, dropping into deeper positions and playing a false nine role reminiscent of Roberto Firmino’s role in the past.
While both forwards are currently underperforming, the fans believe it’s time to provide Gakpo with an opportunity to showcase his skills on the big stage.
