Jamie Carragher questioned Jurgen Klopp’s choice to select Cody Gakpo over Darwin Nunez in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal and warned Luis Diaz.
If Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo don’t step up, Liverpool star Jamie Carragher believes Jurgen Klopp will try to bolster his offensive options next summer.
Klopp has a plethora of forward options, including Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, and the injured Diogo Jota. However, Sky Sports commentator Jamie Carragher has questioned whether Liverpool would need more firepower in the future if they are to compete for major titles.
The veteran Liverpool defender questioned Klopp’s decision to play Gakpo over Nunez in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal, despite the Dutchman scoring against West Ham in midweek. Carragher has also criticized Luis Diaz’s recent form, which he believes is not up to the standard Klopp expects from one of his frontmen.
“Looking at Liverpool’s front three, there’s something not quite right about it,” Carragher said on the Gary Neville podcast. “For me, Nunez starts on the bench, for me he has to be one of the first names on the team sheet.” I saw him in midweek (against West Ham), and while he didn’t score, he was creating, and he can do something. Gakpo has been here for about a year, and he’s had glimpses but not quite enough.
“Diaz just looks like a shadow of himself, knee injuries last season, family problems this season, but I feel Diaz needs a big second half of the season or Liverpool will be looking for a replacement in the summer.”
“Without (Sadio) Mane and (Roberto) Firmino, they haven’t really replaced them in terms of quality, so we’re almost making excuses for him (Nunez).” But Liverpool still has Mo Salah as their number one, Nunez as their number two, and who knows who else in the front three.”
Salah scored for Liverpool in their 1-1 draw with Arsenal, bringing them back from a goal down after Gabriel’s early opener. The Egyptian still has 18 months left on his deal at Anfield, but Saudi Arabia is still interested.
Klopp set tongues going again this week over who may potentially replace Salah, this time complimenting West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen, whom the Liverpool manager has long admired. “[Bowen] is probably my favorite player besides my players,” Klopp remarked ahead of West Ham’s 5-1 win, in which the England international scored the Hammers’ consolation goal. “It’s just great what he’s doing and how he develops.”
One stumbling hurdle for Klopp if he wants to pursue Bowen is that he only signed a seven-year contract with West Ham last summer. “Jurgen Klopp said before the game that Jarrod Bowen is his favorite player in the league other than his own players,” his Hammers teammate Michail Antonio revealed on the Footballer’s Football Podcast. I believe he’s attempting to plant those seeds, man, he wants Jarrod.”
“He can lay the seeds all he wants, mate,” Antonio continued. Bro, the dude just signed a seven-year contract; if he wants it, he can bring the money. Who is he going to replace, because he obviously plays on the right? Are you implying anything here? “Are you going to let Salah go?”
