The 26-year-old defender, formerly of Manchester City, is seen as a potential reinforcement for Liverpool’s defensive ranks, especially on the left side. This position could provide valuable backup for star center-back Virgil van Dijk. The Reds are keen on bolstering their defense, with a left-sided option being a particular focus.

However, Itakura is currently recovering from a serious ankle injury that required surgery, as reported by The Japan Times back in October. The injury has kept him sidelined for several weeks, and while he is expected to make a return in the new year, caution is likely to be exercised to ensure his full recovery.

Despite his injury, Liverpool remains interested in Itakura, indicating their belief in his potential contribution to the team. The defender’s versatility in playing on the left side of a back three or back four makes him a valuable prospect for the Reds.

Notably, Tottenham also expressed interest in Itakura, with former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou reportedly wanting to bring him to the Scottish club.

However, any potential move for Itakura in the upcoming January transfer window may be complicated by the absence of a valid release clause. Liverpool fans will undoubtedly be keeping a keen eye on Itakura’s recovery progress and the potential development of this transfer saga.
