Jurgen Klopp Explains Decision to Bench Cody Gakpo in Liverpool Clash
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has shed light on his decision to leave Cody Gakpo on the bench during the recent match against Newcastle United. Despite Gakpo’s impressive performances in the previous two games, Klopp opted to start with Darwin Nunez as the leading striker. Nunez, however, had a mixed game, displaying involvement but missing significant chances.
Klopp defended his choice, emphasizing that playing Nunez was the right decision strategically. He highlighted Nunez’s role in keeping defenders Botman and Schar occupied, creating space for other players. Klopp acknowledged Nunez’s missed opportunities but expressed confidence in the Uruguayan’s goal-scoring abilities, stating:
“We were talking outside actually about the fact that it was 100% the right decision to play Darwin today,” Klopp said. “Because he kept Botman and Schar together and that led to the space for everyone else.
“It’s completely different if Cody plays there, and he might drop a lot, and they make take up different positions. So we needed him there. As long as Darwin has all these moments it’s all fine. Darwin will score, there is no doubt about it.”
The tactical considerations behind choosing between Gakpo and Nunez were evident in the match against Newcastle, with Klopp suggesting that the different qualities of each player suit varying game scenarios.
As Liverpool faces the absence of Mohamed Salah due to AFCON, Klopp will need to judiciously utilize both Gakpo and Nunez, considering their distinct strengths. The challenge lies in optimizing their contributions and goal-scoring prowess to secure consistent success for Liverpool.
