Ronaldo’s Generosity Shines: Donates 2013 Ballon d’Or for Charity Auction
Cristiano Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, showcased his philanthropic spirit in 2017 by choosing to sell one of his replica trophies, a rarity among football legends. Traditionally, players either present the replica to the club they won it for or include it in their personal trophy collection. However, Ronaldo deviated from the norm with his 2013 Ballon d’Or, opting to donate it to charity, as reported by MARCA.
The 2013 Ballon d’Or marked only Ronaldo’s second in his illustrious career, breaking Lionel Messi’s four-year streak. Securing 27.99% of the vote, Ronaldo triumphed over Messi, who garnered 24.72% and secured the second spot.
The unique trophy was auctioned off with all proceeds directed to Make-A-Wish, a charity dedicated to assisting children battling serious illnesses. The auction, held in London, saw a staggering €600,000 winning bid from Idan Ofer, Israel’s wealthiest individual. Ofer proudly posed with the gold trophy alongside Ronaldo’s longtime representative, Jorge Mendes.
Notably, other items up for auction at the event included a meet and greet with legendary managers Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho at a boxing event in Manchester, fetching a substantial €30,000.
While auctions for Ballon d’Or trophies are relatively uncommon, the memorabilia of Real Madrid legend Alfredo di Stefano garnered significant attention in 2021. Di Stefano’s 1957 Ballon d’Or sold for £60,800, with his second, acquired two years later, fetching £54,400. The rare ‘Super Ballon d’Or,’ exclusive to Di Stefano, commanded an impressive winning bid of £187,500.
Ronaldo’s most recent Ballon d’Or came in 2017, leaving Lionel Messi with the lead in their historic duel, boasting eight Ballon d’Or titles to his name. Ronaldo’s charitable act not only highlights his on-field excellence but also his commitment to making a positive impact beyond the realm of football.
