Jordan Henderson’s Unexpected Exit from Al Ettifaq Challenges Cristiano Ronaldo’s Prophetic Saudi Pro League Prediction
In a surprising turn of events, Jordan Henderson is set to leave Al Ettifaq and the Saudi Pro League after just six months, partially challenging a prediction made by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Henderson, along with numerous top division players from Europe, made the move to Saudi Arabia last month, joining Al Ettifaq under the management of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard. Despite reports of a significant pay rise, Henderson has deferred his reported £350,000 per week salary, raising questions about his motivations.
According to The Telegraph, the decision to defer payments may be linked to a potential return to Britain, allowing Henderson to play for England without the time limitations imposed on those without UK taxpayer status. Al Ettifaq’s struggles on the field, having not won a game since October 28, have added to Henderson’s challenging stint in the Saudi Pro League.
The Daily Mail reports that several foreign imports, including high-profile signings like Roberto Firmino and Karim Benzema, have been unable to find happiness in Saudi Arabia since their summer arrivals. Speculation is growing about potential returns to Europe for these players, undermining Ronaldo’s earlier prediction that the Saudi league would surpass the Turkish and Dutch leagues within a year.
Ronaldo, who played a pivotal role in initiating the exodus to the Saudi Pro League last January with his move to Al Nassr, had boldly stated in July that top players would increasingly flock to Saudi Arabia.
He said in July (quotes via ESPN): “In one year, more and more top players will come to Saudi. In a year the Saudi league will overtake the Turkish league and Dutch league.
“I’m 100 per cent sure I won’t return to any European club. I’m a 38 years old. And European football has lost a lot of quality.
“The only valid one and still doing good is the Premier League. They’re way ahead of all the other leagues.”
However, recent developments, including Henderson’s unexpected departure and the reported discontent among foreign players, cast doubt on the league’s rapid ascension. As the Saudi Pro League faces challenges, Ronaldo’s assertion that he won’t return to any European club appears less certain than it did several months ago.
