In a disturbing incident of racial abuse, 26-year-old Joel Barwise, an Everton supporter, has been banned from attending football matches for three years after admitting to shouting racist remarks at Liverpool player Mohamed Salah during the Merseyside derby at Anfield in October.

Barwise not only directed racist abuse at Salah but also made derogatory remarks mocking the Heysel stadium disaster, an event that carries deep historical significance and tragedy for football fans.

The Crown Prosecution Service revealed that Barwise was observed shouting racial slurs when Salah’s name was announced before the game, and he further taunted home fans about the Heysel disaster. His actions were swiftly addressed as he was identified by a steward and subsequently arrested by Merseyside Police with the assistance of CCTV footage.

Upon being confronted, Barwise initially denied involvement, claiming mistaken identity, but later pleaded guilty, admitting, “Because I’m an idiot,” when asked why he had engaged in such reprehensible behavior.

Senior crown prosecutor Angela Conlan emphasized the severity of Barwise’s actions, noting that they bring shame not only to himself but also to his club. Conlan stressed that such behavior has no place in football, and the majority of Everton fans would likely condemn his actions.

As a consequence of his misconduct, Barwise has been fined £500, received a three-year banning order, and acquired a criminal record. The banning order restricts him from attending any football match in the UK for the next three years and mandates surrendering his passport during international matches abroad. Additionally, he is prohibited from coming within a mile of any Everton match, home or away, or Liverpool Lime Street station on matchday.

The severity of the punishment reflects the determination of authorities to combat racism in football and sends a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated. Meanwhile, Salah’s outstanding performance in the October Merseyside derby, where he scored both goals in Liverpool’s 2-0 victory, stands as a testament to his resilience in the face of adversity.
