Jurgen Klopp Acknowledges His Decision Halted Cody Gakpo’s ‘Flying Form’

Klopp Acknowledges Responsibility for Gakpo’s Form Dip

Jurgen Klopp lauds 'perfect' Cody Gakpo and names his ideal position

In a candid admission, Jurgen Klopp has shouldered the blame for Cody Gakpo’s recent struggles, pointing to his deployment in midfield as a contributing factor.

Gakpo, the Dutch sensation, found himself out of his comfort zone earlier in the season as Klopp experimented with him in a deeper role, disrupting his natural rhythm.

However, a return to his preferred forward position in recent matches has seen Gakpo rediscover his form, culminating in his 10th goal of the season during Saturday’s resounding 4-1 victory over Brentford.

Klopp has committed to utilizing Gakpo in more advanced positions going forward, lauding the array of qualities that make him a potent threat in those areas.

“The statistics speak for themselves, they are more than satisfactory, even exemplary,” Klopp remarked. “Cody encountered some challenges midway through the season, for which I must take responsibility. We deliberated whether Cody could adapt to a midfield role, and while he showcased versatility, it’s evident that his strengths lie elsewhere.

“He possesses the offensive prowess required for such a role, but the defensive responsibilities proved to be a hindrance, denting his confidence at times. His initial meteoric rise encountered a slight hiccup, as is natural in football.

“However, adversity often breeds resilience, and I believe this experience will ultimately benefit him in the long run, albeit with some short-term setbacks.

“We have no intention of deploying him in midfield unless absolutely necessary. Yet, let it be known, Cody remains firmly on our radar. While he may not consider this his finest season, his talent is undeniable, and he consistently poses a threat on the field.

“His aerial ability, adeptness on the ground, clinical finishing, dribbling skills, and ball retention make him an invaluable asset to the team. There are numerous facets to his game that we can capitalize on, and we fully intend to do so.”
