Cristiano Ronaldo Faces Suspension and Fine for Gesture in Saudi Pro League Game
Cristiano Ronaldo, the renowned football icon, has been handed a one-match suspension and fined for his actions during Al-Nassr’s recent Saudi Pro League encounter against Al-Shabab earlier this month.
After Al-Nassr secured a 3-2 victory over Al-Shabab last Sunday, Ronaldo found himself subjected to Lionel Messi chants from rival supporters. In response, Ronaldo stirred controversy by cupping his ear and making a provocative gesture towards his groin area.
The Disciplinary and Ethics Committee of the Saudi Arabia Football Federation (SAFF) announced on Thursday that Ronaldo will serve a one-game ban and must pay a fine of 20,000 Saudi Riyals (£4,200) for his conduct.
The 39-year-old football sensation, who reportedly earns a staggering £3.6 million weekly at Al-Nassr, will sit out the upcoming match against Al-Hazm, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday.
Despite Ronaldo’s absence, Al-Nassr continues its pursuit of glory in the Saudi Pro League, currently occupying the second position, trailing league leaders Al-Hilal by six points.
This incident isn’t the first time Ronaldo has courted controversy. Last April, he narrowly avoided punishment after a similar gesture involving his crotch following a defeat to Al-Hilal.
Ronaldo made headlines with his move to Al-Nassr in January 2023, following the termination of his contract with Manchester United, bringing his star power to the Saudi football landscape.
