Cody Gakpo Reveals Manchester United Talks Before Liverpool Move
In a recent revelation, Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo disclosed that he was in discussions with Manchester United and had conversed with manager Erik ten Hag before securing his move to Anfield.
The Netherlands international had emerged as a prime target for United during the summer of 2022, with persistent speculation linking him to a switch to Old Trafford. Despite United’s reported interest, they ultimately opted to bolster their attack with the signing of Antony from Ajax for a staggering £82 million upfront before the transfer deadline.
Although United were rumored to revisit their pursuit of Gakpo in January 2023, Liverpool preempted them by finalizing an advanced deal in December, securing Gakpo’s services for £37 million upfront.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Gakpo confirmed United’s interest, stating, “I think it was the summer before [I joined Liverpool] that I was in contact with the club [United].” He further revealed having conversations with manager Erik ten Hag, emphasizing his Dutch connection.
Reflecting on his decision to join Liverpool over United, Gakpo asserted, “But at the end, it didn’t go through and that’s just it. In the winter, Liverpool came… best decision for me.”
Despite mixed performances since his move from PSV Eindhoven, Gakpo has outperformed Antony in terms of goal contributions for Liverpool. With 18 goals and eight assists in 63 appearances, Gakpo has demonstrated versatility by operating across various positions in Liverpool’s lineup.
Comparatively, Antony has struggled to make a significant impact at United, managing only nine goals and four assists in 71 appearances. Despite playing more games than Gakpo, Antony has fallen short in terms of goal involvements. Moreover, Gakpo’s £45 million cheaper price tag underscores the value Liverpool secured with his acquisition.
Gakpo’s versatility and consistent performances have proven to be assets for Liverpool, contrasting with Antony’s difficulties in adapting to the Premier League. While Gakpo’s decision to choose Liverpool over United has paid dividends, it highlights the missed opportunity for United in securing his signature.
