Following further disagreements on Mohamed Salah’s fitness, Liverpool’s relationship with the Egyptian FA has gotten worse.
Between the two camps, tensions have increased in the last six weeks following Salah’s hamstring injury sustained at the Africa Cup of Nations. Since the injury during the AFCON, Salah has only made one appearance. On February 17, Liverpool defeated Brentford 4-1, with Salah both scoring and providing an assist.
Salah hasn’t played in any of Liverpool’s last four games as the team is being cautious to prevent the issue from happening again. The Reds requested in writing that Egypt not call him up for forthcoming matches, but their plea was turned down.
Later this month, Egypt is scheduled to take on New Zealand in the Winsunited Cup, a friendly competition held in the United Arab Emirates that also includes Tunisia and Croatia. Though they feel they should be able to judge Salah’s fitness for themselves, they feel their star player is ignoring them.
According to Ehab El Komy of the Egyptian FA, “the Egyptian national team, led by Hossam Hassan and Ibrahim Hassan, could not communicate with Mohamed Salah so far,” as reported by the Daily Mail. “Mohamed Salah and Egypt’s technical staff have not yet met together.”
Egypt is eager to ease the tensions between the two sides, and Mohamed Abu El-Ela, the team doctor, has communicated with Liverpool’s medical staff. El Komy, meantime, stated last week on local media that “we are very keen to remove any misunderstanding (between the two parties) and the national team definitely needs Mohamed’s presence.”
“The coaching staff, the Football Association, and the Egyptian fans are all keen on Salah’s safety,” El Komy had previously said. The coaching staff of the national team will be even more circumspect about his participation in the forthcoming camp if he is not fully prepared. In the next two weeks, he might be fully recovered. We will be eager to have Mohamed Salah here if he’s ready. If not, a different discussion will take place at the designated time.
“If Salah participates in any Liverpool game even up to the date of the international schedule, he will be prepared and we will call him up to the Egyptian national team.” We desire peace, particularly because Hossam Hassan wants every player to be present for Egypt’s successful launch under his direction.”
Salah could play for Liverpool on Sunday at Anfield in their crucial top-of-the-table matchup against Manchester City. Before last weekend’s 1-0 victory against Nottingham Forest, Jurgen Klopp stated, “I don’t think Mo is too far off, but he will not feature [at Forest].”
“We have to leave from there. Touch and go, sadly, continues to be the situation with Mo for a little while longer. However, I believe it is feasible at any point next week. Thus, he is undoubtedly returning, even though he hasn’t arrived yet.
