Man City set an unprecedented special milestone in Champions League history

According to Opta , the result of the match at Etihad yesterday was the ninth consecutive victory Man City scored from three goals at home in the Champions League. The series includes four matches this season: wins against Red Star Belgrade 3-1, Young Boys 3-0, Leipzig 3-2, Copenhagen 3-1, and five matches last season: Copenhagen 5-0, Sevilla 3-1, Leipzig 7 -0, Bayern 3-0 and Real Madrid 4-0.

UEFA started organizing the C1 Cup/Champions League in 1955. After nearly 70 years, even teams rich in attacking traditions like Real Madrid, Barca, or Bayern cannot create records like Man City, the emerging team. The last 10 years and won once.

Man City has won 28 of the last 30 home matches in the Champions League, including the last 12 matches. They are the second team to be unbeaten in at least 30 consecutive home matches in this arena, after Barca – the team with 38 matches, from September 2013 to November 2020.

The match on the evening of March 6 also helped Man City become the first British representative to win 10 consecutive matches in the Champions League. The series of matches includes the semi-final second leg against Real Madrid 4-0 and the final against Inter 1-0 last season, six group stage matches and two round of 1/8 matches this season.

At Etihad Stadium yesterday, Man City led 2-0 after just nine minutes of rolling, thanks to Manuel Akanji’s volley and Julian Alvarez’s long-range shot. Nine minutes is the minimum amount of time for Man City to lead 2-0 in a Champions League match. It is also the shortest time for a team to lead 2-0 in a Champions League knockout round match since the Juventus – Tottenham match in the 2017-2018 season.

After two early goals from Man City , Mohamed Elyounoussi scored a low shot in the penalty area to shorten the score to 1-2 for Copenhagen. However, Erling Haaland soon sealed a 3-1 victory for Man City in the 45+3 minute, with a decisive shot into the near corner. The Norwegian striker has six goals since the beginning of the Champions League season, with Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe leading the top scorer race. Last season, Haaland was crowned top scorer with 12 goals.
