Ronaldo Fumes as Portugal Suffers Shock Defeat to Slovenia

Cristiano Ronaldo’s frustration was palpable as he exited the pitch following Portugal’s unexpected 2-0 loss to Slovenia in a friendly encounter on Tuesday night.

Although the 39-year-old superstar had missed the previous match against Sweden, during which Roberto Martinez’s side secured their 11th consecutive victory under his management, Ronaldo returned to the starting lineup in Ljubljana. 

However, despite Portugal’s tenacious efforts, second-half goals from midfielders Adam Cerin and Timi Elsnik sealed a surprising triumph for Slovenia, leaving Ronaldo visibly displeased.

Footage captured Ronaldo storming off the pitch at the game’s conclusion, reflecting the disappointment of Portugal’s inability to capitalize on their opportunities. Despite registering ten shots during the match, with two falling to Ronaldo himself, Portugal failed to convert any chances, succumbing to Slovenia’s resilient performance. Notably, Slovenia is slated to compete in England’s group at Euro 2024.

Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer appeared disconnected from the action, focusing more on contesting fouls and appealing to officials than influencing the match’s outcome.

While Martinez’s managerial streak extended to 11 wins with a commanding 5-2 victory over Sweden, Portugal must regroup ahead of their upcoming June friendlies against Finland, Croatia, and Ireland, aiming to build momentum for the European Championships.

In Euro 2024, Portugal is set to face Czechia, Turkey, and Georgia, the latter prevailing over Greece in a chaotic penalty shootout following a tumultuous playoff match.

Meanwhile, Slovenia, who previously drew 2-2 with Malta, is scheduled to play against Armenia and Bulgaria before Euro 2024 commences. At the tournament in Germany, Slovenia is slated to confront Denmark and Serbia before their pivotal group stage clash against England in Cologne on June 25th.
