Former Red rates Liverpool standout Cody Gakpo a 7/10: Adequate, yet room for improvement

Liverpool acquisitions So far, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo have only managed a 7/10, and they are just establishing themselves as useful additions.

Sander Westerveld, a former goalkeeper for Liverpool, thinks the two will improve in the future.

Gakpo was the first of the two to arrive at Anfield last year. He joined Liverpool in a €42 million deal from PSV Eindhoven after making an impression in the Netherlands for several seasons.

Although he has been a constant for Liverpool ever since, he has only played in 44% of the Premier League minutes this season, therefore he has not yet firmly established himself as a major player.

Given that he arrived with 55 goals and 50 assists in 159 games for PSV, a record of 20 goals and eight assists is perhaps below what the Reds were hoping for as well.

There have been concerns voiced concerning the transfer, and the situation with fellow Dutchman Gravenberch—who signed a €40 million contract with Bayern Munich in the summer—is comparable.

Similar to Gakpo, he has not yet established himself completely; this season, he has only played 36% of the minutes in the Premier League and has been more active in the cup tournaments.

That implies that he is also being questioned, but Westerveld believes the two are fine and could even become future stars.

“Everyone was very enthusiastic right away, and Gregg started very well,” he told Soccer News.

It became a little hit or miss after that. This also holds true for Gakpo. I believe I would give him a seven if I had to him a grade. It’s a solid pass. Both have bright futures ahead of them.
