Liverpool Legend Phil Thompson Advocates for Cody Gakpo’s Starting Role

Liverpool icon Phil Thompson has proposed that manager Jurgen Klopp should consider promoting Cody Gakpo to the starting lineup in place of Darwin Nunez for their upcoming Europa League quarter-final clash against Atalanta. 

The suggestion comes in the wake of a disappointing draw against Manchester United, with spirits needing a lift as Liverpool aim for success in Klopp’s final season.

With the Reds already securing the Carabao Cup, the Europa League represents another significant opportunity for silverware. Klopp may opt for rotation against Atalanta, given the quick turnaround before their domestic fixture against Crystal Palace.

Thompson believes that Gakpo, despite his recent cameo appearances, has shown the hunger and desire to contribute significantly to the team. Reflecting on Gakpo’s performances against United and Sheffield United, Thompson suggests that the Dutchman may have earned a starting spot over Nunez.

“In the FA Cup [last month], Cody came on against Manchester United and he looked devoid of ideas,” Thompson remarked on The Official Liverpool FC Podcast. “Today [against United], he looked hungry, he looked as though he wanted to be part of it.”

While Gakpo has faced criticism, particularly from Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher for his performance against United, cup competitions have provided a platform for him to showcase his abilities amid stiff competition for Premier League minutes in attack.

The versatile forward has made significant contributions in the Europa League and Carabao Cup, highlighting his value to Klopp’s squad since his arrival from PSV Eindhoven. Liverpool’s status as favorites in the Europa League further underscores the importance of Gakpo’s potential role in their pursuit of success.

As Liverpool prepares to face Atalanta, Thompson’s suggestion advocates for strategic changes aimed at maximizing the team’s chances of progression in the tournament.
