The Liverpool forward played a starring role in leading the West African country to win their first continental title.
Abdoulaye Diop, mayor of the Senegalese province of Sedhiou, has announced plans to name the city’s new stadium after Liverpool player Sadio Mane in recognition of his success at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 29-year-old struck the decisive penalty kick to help Senegal defeat Egypt 4-2 in the penalty shootout following a goalless draw at the end of extra time, securing the country’s first Afcon title.
Mane appeared in all of the Teranga Lions’ games in Cameroon, contributing three goals and two assists.
Mane’s Afcon victory culminated his successes as a native of Sedhiou, a region in Senegal’s south-west, having previously won major trophies with Liverpool, including the Fifa Club World Cup, Uefa Super Cup, Uefa Champions League, and the Premier League.
“Sadio Mane has honoured all of Senegal, the Sedhiou region, and the entire Casamance area,” Diop told Sports News Africa.
“I’ve chosen to name Sedhiou Stadium after him.
“In doing so, I would like to express the gratitude of all the sons and daughters of the region to him.”
“He has made the entire world aware of Bambali and Sedhiou, the region’s principal town. This is a gift that Sadio Mane deserves.
Following their successful arrival from Cameroon, Senegal President Macky Sall welcomed Aliou Cisse’s troops with a beautiful reception in the Presidential Palace on Tuesday.
President Sall presented the country’s highest order on each player, naming them Grand Officers of the National Order of the Lion.
In addition to the honor, each of the players and coaching staff earned a bonus of 50 million francs CFA ($87,412) and a 200-square-meter plot of land in Dakar, the country’s capital.
