One of the team’s many gifted attackers, Cody Gakpo of Liverpool, has the potential to become in importance as the team moves forward in 2024.
With a decisive 4-2 victory against Tottenham this past weekend, the Reds recovered from a couple poor performances to stay in the middle of the Premier League title fight.
For the second time this season, Cody Gakpo had a standout performance, scoring and dishing out assists in the same contest. The Dutchman’s assist was especially noteworthy because of the skillful lofting of the ball to Mohamed Salah at the far post.
Gakpo, who was signed in the winter transfer window of 2023, was one of the best players in European football during his time at PSV, but it has taken him some time to establish himself as a Liverpool regular.
The gifted 24-year-old still doesn’t start every game, however recently he had a run of five straight games where he came off the bench.
Gakpo possesses the technical and physical skills to be a consistent starter for Liverpool when healthy, but the Reds must determine where the adaptable striker is most effective.
The versatility of a gifted young player can ultimately become a hindrance since it keeps them from developing a routine at one specific position, as Phil Foden at Manchester City can attest to.
Given that he can utilize all of his skills to the maximum in the left wing position, Cody Gakpo may find that this is the role that best suits him in the long run.
Naturally, Luis Diaz, another gifted winger with explosive dribbling and creative ability, fills the left wing position. However, if the transfer rumors involving PSG and Barcelona are to be believed, Diaz may be leaving Liverpool.
Gakpo might perhaps have the chance to start there on a regular basis. Although Gakpo possesses the technical skill and passing vision of a 10, that is not a position that is particularly gifted, and several other outstanding Liverpool players, including Dominik Szoboszlai and exceptional loanee Fabio Carvalho, could easily fill it.
On the left wing, Gakpo, while playing a little slower but closer to goal, would be a stronger, more technical option to Diaz. He might loft in assists like the one to Salah.
Gakpo can play more like a support striker and contribute to goals as a left winger, even more so than an inverted right-footed left winger, when he plays the left wing position.
