Cody Gakpo Offers Concise One-Word Assessments for All 24 Liverpool Teammates

In a fast-paced interview, Cody Gakpo shared his thoughts on all 24 of his Liverpool colleagues, including insightful assessments of some of the team’s biggest players.

Gakpo moved from PSV Eindhoven to the club in January 2023, and he has been with them for just over a year. Since then, he has been in and out of the team, though as the current season draws to a close, he is currently enjoying a period in the lineup.

Naturally, the 25-year-old will want to grab Arne Slot’s attention when he makes the anticipated transfer to Anfield this summer to take Jürgen Klopp’s position. If the newly appointed manager wants to assess his new team quickly, he can head directly to Gakpo.

In an ESPN interview, Gakpo was asked to sum up each of his Liverpool colleagues in one word. While some of them are quite predictable, others are a little less so.

In an attempt to break the one-word restriction for each of his colleagues, Gakpo began describing Mohamed Salah as the “Egyptian king.” Virgil van Dijk was assigned the title of “leader,” Dominik Szoboszlai as “shooting,” Darwin Núñez as “pace,” Alexis Mac Allister as “intelligence,” and Luis Díaz as “dribbling.”

Adrián, the “father of the group,” Curtis Jones, “top player,” Diogo Jota, “Jogoal, because he always scores,” Joe Gomez, “kindness himself,” Wataru Endō, “maturity,” Ryan Gravenberch, “quality,” and Jarell Quansah, “big shift,” are among the others whose descriptions will make them delighted.

For a few of his other comrades, Gakpo adopted a somewhat different strategy. Trent Alexander-Arnold inhaled deeply before responding, “That’s enough, he knows.” In the meanwhile, he spoke a little French to Ibrahima Konaté, referring to him as “mon frère” (my brother).

“When I think about Thiago, I think about skills,” Gakpo responded to a question on Thiago Alcântara. Alisson Becker was called a “big brother in Christ, because he’s a religious person as well,” and left-backs Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas were called “very, very funny” and “crazy guy,” respectively.

Rather interesting descriptions were offered to the other players. Gakpo smiled before referring to Harvey Elliott as a “special kid,” and Stefan Bajčetić was described as “being late.” A rivalry appears to be developing as well; Conor Bradley is described as someone who “thinks he’s the best at darts,” while Caoimhín Kelleher is called “darts.”

Joël Matip was given the most perplexing description, nevertheless. Gakpo summarized the defender by saying, “shower,” without providing any context.
