Head coach Luis de la Fuente has announced the preliminary list of 29 players for the Spanish team participating in Euro 2024. This list will be shortened before the UEFA deadline on June 7.
Spain announces EURO 2024 qualifying list
Barcelona’s young midfielder Pedri – who last played for the national team at the 2022 World Cup (eliminated in the 1/8 round) – is on the list. Coach De La Fuente shared: “No one doubts Pedri’s talent, he is a great player. Pedri needs to find his peak form, and he is on that path. We will help him. there.”
Alongside Pedri is teammate Fermin Lopez, the 21-year-old who had a breakthrough season and made his national team debut last October. Defender Pau Cubarsi, 17 years old, was also called up for the first time. However, he is not the youngest. The “youngest boy” on the Spain team this time is 16-year-old wing striker Lamine Yamal, Cubarsi’s teammate at Barcelona. Thus, all 5 Barcelona players recruited this time are from the GenZ generation, of which the “oldest” is Ferran Torres, also born in 2000.
Other pillars such as defender Nacho (Real Madrid), midfielder Marcos Llorente (Atletico Madrid) and striker Ayoze Perez (Real Betis) all participated. Meanwhile, young midfielder Gavi was removed from the preliminary list because of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury last November. Notably, Paris Saint-Germain striker Marco Asensio is also not on the call-up list.
