Gakpo Eyes Left-Wing Role at EUROs, Reveals Conversations with Koeman
Liverpool FC attacker Cody Gakpo recently shared his ambitions for the upcoming EUROs in an interview with Ziggo Sport. When asked about his preferred position, Gakpo’s response was clear:
“I spoke to him (Koeman) briefly about that a few months ago, about the left-wing position. Furthermore, I have not heard any other position. The message at the time was that I had to stay fit, that worked.”
Gakpo, who has showcased his versatility by playing as a striker and even dropping into midfield, ended the season primarily in the left-wing role, reminiscent of his days at PSV Eindhoven. Addressing the challenges of playing multiple positions, he commented:
“That’s tricky, but in the end, it also makes you a better player, I think. That has been very difficult with phases. Customise your game again and again. I have always tried my best and tried to fill it in as best I can. Sometimes that went very well, and sometimes it didn’t go very well.”
Gakpo’s statements highlight the strategic decisions facing the club regarding the frontline. Whether he is the best and most productive option for the left-wing position will be determined after a very busy summer.
