Netherlands Cruises Past Iceland 4-0, De Jong’s EURO 2024 Participation in Doubt
In a commanding performance, the Netherlands triumphed over Iceland with a resounding 4-0 victory in their last friendly encounter before heading to Germany for EURO 2024, rounding off their preparations on a high note.
Despite Iceland’s recent upset win against England, the Dutch squad, under the guidance of coach Age Hareide, approached the match with utmost respect for their opponents. However, the tension quickly escalated as the game kicked off at Feyenoord Stadium.
The Netherlands took an early lead in the 23rd minute when Xavi Simons capitalized on Denzel Dumfries’ assist to slot home a goal. Iceland found themselves overwhelmed by the relentless pressure from the hosts, struggling to mount any significant attacks.
The Dutch dominance continued into the second half, with Virgil van Dijk doubling the lead early on with a well-timed header from a corner kick delivered by Nathan Ake.
Although Iceland threatened to claw back into the game with a long-range effort from Stefan Thordarson in the 70th minute, their hopes were dashed as the Netherlands intensified their pursuit of more goals.
In the dying moments of the match, substitute Donyell Malen not only found the back of the net himself but also provided an assist for Wout Weghorst to seal the emphatic 4-0 victory for the Netherlands.
However, amidst the celebration, the Dutch camp received a blow as midfielder Frankie de Jong departed the field due to injury, casting doubt on his participation in EURO 2024.
The Netherlands concluded their pre-tournament preparations with another win, defeating Turkey 2-1 in their final friendly match. Nicola Zalewski emerged as the hero, netting the decisive goal in the dying minutes of the game.
