England got off to a good start at Euro 2024 with a 1-0 win over Serbia on the opening day. However, the performance of the Three Lions stars left fans unsatisfied.
One of the stars who received a lot of criticism after the match was midfielder Phil Foden. Despite playing the full 90 minutes, the Man City star’s contributions were very limited. He did not successfully dribble the ball once, did not finish once and only had one pass to create an opportunity for his teammates.
The midfielder wearing shirt number 11 appears to be relatively out of place on the left wing, a position that is not his forte.
During the BBC match commentary program, former player Cesc Fabregas expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of the England team in general and Phil Foden in particular.
“England only managed to push their opponents back into their own half once in the second half, but as soon as they were put under pressure, we saw Foden shoot the ball without looking from nearly 40 yards out.
“You never see Xavi, Iniesta or any of the top players in the last 20 years doing that. England’s performance in the second half was very disappointing. And I think players like Foden need to step up at times like that. They need to prove their worth when they play for their country at a major tournament,” said Cesc Fabregas.
Former Man City player Micah Richards also agreed:
“It’s sad to see a player of Phil Foden’s quality almost disappear from the game. It’s disappointing that England couldn’t get the best out of him.”
After the victory over Serbia, England will have about 3 days of rest before playing the second match against Denmark on June 20.
