Germany Clinches Knockout Spot with 2-0 Victory Over Hungary
In their second match of Euro 2024, Germany secured a 2-0 win over Hungary on Wednesday night in Stuttgart, guaranteeing their place in the knockout stages.
Germany, under the leadership of Julian Nagelsmann, made it two wins from two. The match began evenly, with both sides probing for an opening. The first significant chance came from Kai Havertz, whose close-range effort was expertly saved by Hungary’s Peter Gulacsi.
The breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute. Initially, Hungary seemed to have neutralized the danger from Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gündogan, but a slight nudge on Willi Orban left him on the ground. Seizing the moment, Gündogan regained control and set up Musiala, who deftly finished to become the first player to score twice in this tournament.
Hungary’s most threatening response came shortly after, in the 26th minute. Dominik Szoboszlai’s curling free-kick looked destined for the top corner, only for Manuel Neuer to make a spectacular save, denying the Liverpool midfielder.
Just before halftime, Hungary thought they had equalized when Rolland Sallai found the net, but his effort was disallowed for offside after a VAR check.
The second half saw Germany maintain control, though Hungary did create a notable chance. Barnabás Varga rose to meet a cross from Sallai, but his header missed the target.
Germany doubled their lead in the 72nd minute. Maximilian Mittelstädt delivered a precise low cross, and Gündogan coolly converted, putting the result beyond doubt.
Hungary nearly pulled one back late in the game when Neuer mishandled a cross, but Joshua Kimmich’s quick reaction preserved Germany’s clean sheet.
This victory puts Germany at the top of Group A with six points, securing their progression to the round of 16. They will face Switzerland in their final group match on Sunday, with the group leadership at stake.
