When Luka Modric scored for Croatia against Italy in their Group B encounter on Monday, he became the oldest player to score in the history of the European Championships.
Gianluigi Donnarumma stopped a Modric penalty in the 54th minute of play. Shortly after, Modric found himself in the ideal position to receive a cross that fell into the box for Ante Budimir, whose first attempt was parried by Donnarumma.
At point-blank range, Modric found himself with the rebound and flashed the ball into the top of the net.
Luka Modric surpasses Ivica Vastic of Poland to become the oldest scorer in the history of the European Championships at 38 years and 289 days.
Since making his debut for Croatia in 2006, Modric has played in 178 matches. During this period, he has assisted on 29 goals and scored 26 goals.
He will be trying to round off his career on a good note as he leads the Croatian national team to a runner-up and their-place finishes in the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, respectively. This is his fifth and perhaps final Euros.
