The Boston Celtics won Game 5 of the NBA Finals by 18 points over the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night, capping a 16-year title drought and adding an 18th banner to their collection.
Many think that this marks the beginning of a dynasty and the end of the NBA’s previous period of parity, in which six different teams have won the last six championships, because their complete playoff rotation is guaranteed for at least one more year. Many teams, including the 2023 winners in Denver, would believe they blew a chance when they lost Game 7 to Minnesota in the second round. These clubs hope to challenge Boston’s basketball dominance in the coming season.
Denver still has to round out the roster and add more consistent postseason depth, but having Nikola Jokic, the three-time MVP, on the roster guarantees a puncher’s chance. As is traditional in the summer, Jokic has returned to his hometown of Sombor, Serbia, where he can be seen enjoying life at the racecourse or singing and dancing at a local tavern.
What we don’t always see in the summer is Jokic working out on the court, as he isn’t the type of basketball player who posts pictures or videos of himself “in the lab” during offseason training. However, a video posted on Twitter on Tuesday showed Jokic receiving some light court time in the form of a 3-on-3 game at a park in Sombor with what appears to be a random group of people playing pickup.
Jokic is obviously not moving at full speed here, but I would never stop talking about it if I were the dude who got a bucket on Jokic. I also wanted to mention Jokic’s buddy, who refuses to play a two-man game with him, dribbling right by him and waiving him off before launching a three that bricks. That’s what pickup ball is all about, and I’m glad the overconfidence of random individuals at the park endures even when your team includes the finest basketball player in the world.
