Russell Westbrook was bought out by the Utah Jazz earlier this offseason, and the Denver Nuggets signed him in free agency. Westbrook was moved to Utah from the Los Angeles Clippers, where he had spent the previous two seasons.
Westbrook, a nine-time All-Star and the 2017 NBA MVP, is one of the league’s most decorated active players. Westbrook can compete for his first championship in Denver.
Along with three-time MVP Nikola Jokic, the Nuggets now have another former MVP on their team. Among other things, Westbrook should be able to minimise Jokic’s offensive workload this season.
When questioned about Westbrook during Tuesday’s media day, Jokic delivered an honest response.
“Of course we didn’t have a great relationship on the court (as opponents),” Jokic told the audience. “We were fighting a lot and conversing back and forth. But I know who he is outside the court. Excellent teammate, worker, and leader; the person you want to listen to and follow in the gym. So I think he’s a terrific player for us, and I believe he’ll bring us a lot of success.”
During media day, Nuggets head coach Michael Malone praised Westbrook’s defensive abilities.
Westbrook succeeded in this area last season, and he can carry it to a higher level for Denver.
