Russell Westbrook no longer plays for the Los Angeles Lakers or Clippers, but he continues to give back to the Southern California community.
On Monday, Westbrook held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and delivered a speech to inaugurate the new Westbrook Academy site in South Gate, California. The nine-time All-Star founded the institution with his wife Nina, business partner Donnell Beverly, and the LA Promise Fund. The academy educates pupils in grades 6-12 in South and Southeast Los Angeles.
Aside from classrooms, the extended site and new educational facility include a film studio, science labs, two wellness facilities, and a student lounge.
The Westbrooks and Beverly teamed with the LA Promise Fund to open the Westbrook Academy in 2021.
Jalen Rose, Victor Oladipo, and Carlos Boozer were among the current and former NBA players who responded to Westbrook’s Instagram post about the incident. Additionally, Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, and Trae Young liked the post.
The future Hall of Famer spent the last three seasons in Los Angeles with the Lakers and Clippers before joining the Denver Nuggets this offseason.
With a resume that includes the 2016-17 MVP, two scoring titles, nine All-NBA choices, and three assist crowns, the only thing lacking is a championship. He hopes to alter that by teaming up with Nikola Jokić and Co.
And he’ll have the entire academy rooting for him as he tries to win the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
