The best player in the world had a career game on Saturday night against the Wizards, and he followed it up with another extraordinary performance tonight against Atlanta.
The Hawks had no answer for Jokic throughout the game, as he finished with 48 points, 14 rebounds, and eight assists on 17-of-29 shooting, including 3-of-6 from three-point range. Jokic set his career high last night against Washington with 56 points, and he delivered again tonight. What’s even more impressive is that the Nuggets secured this victory without their other star, Jamal Murray. When Jokic is playing at this level, Denver often doesn’t need Murray.
The first half was as rough as it could get for the Hawks. Even in the absence of Jalen Johnson and Bogdan Bogdanovic, the Hawks struggled mightily, particularly in the first half. The Nuggets looked highly motivated after their loss to the Wizards, and when combined with the Hawks’ poor offensive display, it created a perfect storm for disaster.
Denver jumped ahead of Atlanta quickly, leading 15-8 at the first timeout with 7:03 left in the first quarter, then extending that lead to 28-17 by the next timeout at 2:54. Atlanta couldn’t find the basket, while Nikola Jokic dominated the court. By the end of the first quarter, Denver led 38-23, with the Hawks shooting just 30% and going 0-for-8 from three, while Denver shot 56% from the field and 43% from beyond the arc. The Hawks needed to make a run whenever Jokic went to the bench, as that’s how most teams find success against Denver due to their lack of depth. However, Atlanta never made the game competitive and saw their winning streak halted by Jokic and the Nuggets.
Despite losing three of their last four games, the Nuggets triumphed over Atlanta 141-111 tonight, largely thanks to Jokic’s brilliance. Now, Atlanta will shift its focus to the upcoming NBA quarterfinals matchup against the Knicks on Wednesday.
